Topic – Trauma and PTSD

Frank Ochberg, one of the first people I have heard talk about the damage to the mother/child relationship when the mother is the non-offending parent as well as speaking in an accessible style.

“In the case of incest it’s usually the father or the mother’s second husband or boyfriend, and the saddest thing about incest is the loss of trust for your mom…”

Bessel Van der Kolk, Trauma Expert, in Audio Interview with Krista Tippett of On Being. The frugal me must tell you that it generally costs a good deal of money to hear this man’s expertise so this is a gem in content and accessibility.

From Part 1 “Recovery happens, in my view, only in community….Peers. Peers are the key tor recovery. And I can’t emphasize that enough. Credentialed mental health professionals like me, in my view, have no place in center stage. It’s the verterans themselves, healing each other that belong in center stage. We’re stage hands.”

Judith Herman, it’s from 2008. Somewhat dated but still relevant. Herman is a pioneer. At around 23 minutes in there’s some information about PTSD, and feelings of “double reality” and how consciousness can be divided when controlled. A call to political action as well.

“Psychology is a very soft science putting it at its most charitable.”

“You’re dealing with very profound questions of human evil, human cruelty, human sadism, the abuse of power and authority. And the antitode to that is the solidarity of resistance. No one can do that alone.”
