It’s so strange for this writer usually with the pen and asking the questions to be asked questions instead. It’s new for me to be interviewed or to appear live on camera.
It’s uncomfortable.
Is that really my skin tone or the way I pronounce things? How often do I scrunch my face like that? How can my glasses not make everything catch on fire when the magnification level is so apparent and huge? Do I make any sense at all?
But those are silly little worries. Seriously tiny in the big scheme.
Feeling alone or silenced or physically burdened by trauma or traumatic stress – that’s big. That’s huge. That’s agony.
That’s far too common still.
So if this helps anyone feel some relief, hope or respite that’s what I’m after. If this helps us know healing is available and that the culture of silence about sexual violence needs a massive overhaul – YAY!
I’ll share.
Plus, honestly for so damn long what I’ve craved most often is just conversation, ordinary and real with people who get it. I think many survivors of trauma (or life) crave the same.
I’m so grateful to Suzette Martinez Standring for wanting to let people know writing can be healing, in general, and for survivors of abuse and trauma in particular.
She wrote this column which is nationally syndicated and was published today.
And she knows about writing columns. She’s literally written the book on column writing. Here’s her website so you can follow her work.
And here is a link to the You Tube version of the Milton Cable Access show. The link is to the full 1/2 hour show. Here’s a short snippet.
We are not alone.
Our stories and experiences matter.
Writing can save lives.
