The Lemonade Makers: Circle of Six with Christine Corbett Moran

Lemon Still LifeChristine Corbett Moran shares her own personal story which inspired the creation of an app for women in college. She’s smart, resilient and making a difference in the lives of college-aged women now. That’s some sweet wonderful to add to life’s lemons, right?

Well suck on this stingy tart fact:

1 in 5 female college students will be sexually assaulted while at college. No, that’s not a typo. 20%.

How often would you play the lottery if your chances of winning were 1 in 5? That’s not a small percentage.

Are you shaking your head? Is your mouth hanging open like mine is and are you too shocked to even release a real scream? Is it kept down by terror because someone you know or love is in college or will be or has been? Are you remembering your own college experience?

What is being taught when a 20% chance of sexual assault is part of the price to pay for pursuing a higher education?

When are we going to be intolerant to sexual violence? When will it be more shameful to violate and abuse than it is to admit to being violated and abused? We aren’t there yet.

20% is an insanely large number. That’s too much lemonade to ask a college student to make when she should be studying, taking dance classes and learning about the world. Can we make it so that sexual violence isn’t a part of the life orientation for so many?

It’s wonderful that we have lemonade makers like Corbett Moran. But shouldn’t some of those people who making lemonade making necessary go fix up their own ingredients?
