Elephant Journal Published Poem!

I usually edit my work, think (and often over think), work (and often over work) what I’ve done.

Not here. This one was a don’t as a non-stop free-write. Ten minutes and I didn’t invite my brain. I copied, pasted and sent it to Elephant Journal before the editor, critic and worrier if it makes sense showed up.

They ran it – in less than 48 hours.

Here it is:

I learned a few things.

1. I need to write shorter, at least some times.

2. Not all pieces need to include the who, what, where, how and why as is true in a news story.

3. Readers will get it even if I think it makes no sense or I did’t spell out the connections. I might be dense but readers are smart.

4. It’s good to take risks. This is take risks week.

You Matter Mantras

  • Trauma sucks. You don't.
  • Write to express not to impress.
  • It's not trauma informed if it's not informed by trauma survivors.
  • Breathing isn't optional.
