A new study just out in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry<\/a> shows\u00a0the\u00a0benefits of yoga practice for trauma survivors with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It\u00a0details how\u00a0symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder are reduced by a practice.<\/p>\n

This quote from the discussion section of the abstract is powerful:<\/p>\n

“Yoga significantly reduced PTSD symptomatology, with effect sizes comparable to well-researched psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacologic approaches.<\/strong> Yoga may improve the functioning of traumatized individuals by helping them to tolerate physical and sensory experiences associated with fear and helplessness and to increase emotional awareness and affect tolerance.”<\/p>\n

The existence of\u00a0clinical evidence is both new and monumental.\u00a0 With more\u00a0“science” to back up what our bodies already know about yoga,\u00a0perhaps more\u00a0funding will be available for\u00a0those wishing to become trauma-sensitive teachers and more\u00a0insurance companies will cover yoga classes.<\/p>\n

The study reported results\u00a0comparable\u00a0to therapy and medication. Maybe\u00a0yoga will become a primary\u00a0treatment of PTSD and\/or\u00a0supplement other traditional and non-traditional approaches.<\/p>\n

I know yoga and writing are even more powerful.<\/p>\n
