I met a friend on Thursday and we did an impromptu free-writing session. Stuff was going on in her life and chit chatting just wasn’t going to do it and be quite enough.

Free-Writing Topics:

Where I’m from….

Letter to my 80-year old self…

The process isn’t intended to create perfect writing, cohesive narrative or Wow others with your use of metaphor. It’s writing for you, to let go of stuff floating around inside of you causing headaches or heartache and which helps you reconnect with your humor and hope. If you are lucky and so choose, to share and let others in to bear witness, and offer the same space for them, that offers an added layer of healing.

The first one I did, dug deep and felt heavy, as my mind is spinning in old memories due the death of one of the siblings I grew up with and haven’t seen for 25 years.

Often, if I write more than one free-write, the heaviness comes up but so does the lightness. If there’s space and safety for all thoughts and feelings that’s often what you’ll get.
